Carney Updates | Fred Willard, Comedy Legend and Inaugural Carney Awards Host, Passes Away at 86
The Third Annual Carney Awards, held at the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica, CA, featured some of the industry’s most versatile character actors from both drama and comedy. Opening with a high-energy dance number by “The Dancing Nortons,” the evening honored the legendary William H. Macy, Wendie Malick, Xander Berkeley, Richard Kind and William Fichtner. Host Tom Bergeron welcomed multiple character actors as award presenters, including Allison Janney, Jeff Garlin, Dan Lauria and Titus Welliver. The popular segment Name That Character Actor returned, rounding out another great evening of fast-paced entertainment.
William Macy began his acting career with roles in over 50 Broadway and Off-Broadway plays. He went on to appear on several TV series, including Kate & Allie and Law & Order. His work on ER and Sports Night was recognized with Emmy® nominations. William’s leading role in Fargo helped him gain widespread recognition. Other roles included Benny & Joon; Above Suspicion; Mr. Holland’s Opus; Ghosts of Mississippi; Air Force One; Boogie Nights; Pleasantville; Psycho (remake); Happy, Texas; Mystery Men; Magnolia; Jurassic Park III; Focus; Panic; Welcome to Collinwood; Seabiscuit; The Cooler and Sahara. William’s performance in the critically-acclaimed Shameless earned him an Emmy® nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He has won two Emmy® Awards and four Screen Actors Guild Awards, and been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Wendie is best known for her roles in television comedies. She starred as Judith Tupper Stone in the HBO sitcom Dream On, and as Nina Van Horn in the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me!, for which she was nominated for two Primetime Emmys® and a Golden Globe Award. She also starred as Victoria Chase in the TV Land comedy series Hot in Cleveland, which earned both ratings and critical success. In addition to a recurring role on Kate & Allie, Wendie is known for her recurring role as Ronee Lawrence on the final season of Frasier. She also guest-starred on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Law & Order. Malick has played many character roles in films, including Scrooged, The American President, Racing Stripes, and Confessions of a Shopaholic, and has made over 50 guest appearances on television shows, primarily on comedies. She also has starred in several made-for-television movies.
Richard Kind is an accomplished stage, screen and television actor who continues to redefine the term character actor. Richard appeared in the 2013 Best Picture Academy Award-winning Argo, and additional film credits include The Visitor and The Station Agent. In television, besides his infamous roles on Spin City and Mad About You, Kind starred in the acclaimed HBO series Luck, and more recently is a recurring character on Curb Your Enthusiasm. On stage, Kind has starred in the smash hit Broadway musical The Producers, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, Candide, and Bounce, among others. Richard also has had a successful career as a voice artist for multiple films. He voiced Riley’s imaginary friend Bing Bong in Pixar’s Inside Out and provides the voice of Olly and Saraline’s dad Harvey Timbers in Welcome to the Wayne.
William Fichtner is known for his roles as Sheriff Tom Underlay in Invasion and Alexander Mahone in Prison Break. His film appearances include Heat, Contact, Armageddon, The Perfect Storm, Go, Crash, Blades of Glory, Black Hawk Down, The Longest Yard, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Date Night, The Lone Ranger, Elysium, Independence Day: Resurgence and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He also had roles in The Dark Knight and Equilibrium. William had a leading role in Passion of Mind. His role in Crash won him a Screen Actors Guild Outstanding Performance Award and a “Best Acting Ensemble” Award from Broadcast Film Critics Choice. His television appearances also include guest starring as judge Christopher Mulready in The West Wing. William had a recurring role as TV producer Phil Yagoda on Entourage.
Xander made early TV series appearances in M*A*S*H, Cagney & Lacey, Remington Steele, Miami Vice, Moonlighting, and The A-Team. His later television guest roles included The X-Files, CSI, ER and Law & Order. On the big screen, Berkeley has appeared in North Country, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mommie Dearest, Phoenix, Kick-Ass, A Few Good Men, The Rookie, Candyman, Apollo 13, Leaving Las Vegas, Gattaca, Air Force One, Sid and Nancy, Spawn, Amistad, Shanghai Noon, Barb Wire and Timecode. In 2001, Berkeley became a recurring guest star and later on a series regular on 24. In 2010, he received one of his best-known roles, that of Percy Rose in the CW action-thriller series Nikita. Berkeley portrayed Gregory on AMC’s The Walking Dead, originally in a guest role and later becoming a series regular.
